Modal verbs, also known as modals, are a type of auxiliary verb that express a range of meanings in English grammar. They are used to indicate various degrees of possibility, permission, ability, obligation, and prediction, among other things. In this article, we will explore the different modal verbs and their functions in English grammar.

The most common modal verbs in English are:

• can
• could
• may
• might
• must
• shall
• should
• will
• would

 

 

Each of these modal verbs has its own specific functions, which we will explain in more detail below.

• Can: This modal verb is used to express ability or permission. For example, “I can speak Spanish fluently” or “Can I borrow your pen?”
• Could: This modal verb is used to express possibility or past ability. For example, “It could rain later” or “When I was younger, I could run a mile in under six minutes.”
• May: This modal verb is used to express possibility or permission. For example, “It may snow tonight” or “May I use the restroom?”
• Might: This modal verb is similar to “may” and is also used to express possibility. For example, “I might go to the beach tomorrow.”
• Must: This modal verb is used to express obligation or necessity. For example, “I must finish this project by Friday” or “You must wear a seatbelt while driving.”
• Shall: This modal verb is used to express future action or to make a suggestion. For example, “We shall meet at the park at noon” or “Shall we go to the movies tonight?”
• Should: This modal verb is used to express advice or obligation. For example, “You should eat more fruits and vegetables” or “I should have studied harder for the test.”
• Will: This modal verb is used to express future action or prediction. For example, “I will graduate next year” or “It will be a sunny day tomorrow.”
• Would: This modal verb is used to express past habits or conditionals. For example, “When I was younger, I would always eat ice cream after dinner” or “If I had more time, I would go on a vacation.”

Modal verbs play an important role in English grammar by indicating various degrees of possibility, permission, ability, obligation, and prediction. It is important to use them correctly in order to convey the intended meaning in a sentence.

 

 

 

আজকের ক্লাসের আলোচনার বিষয়, ইংরেজি ব্যাকরণের “মোডাল ভার্বস (Modal Verbs)” বা “মোডাল অক্সিলিয়ারি ভার্বস (Modal auxiliary verbs)”। “মোডাল ভার্বস (Modal Verbs)” এর এই ক্লাসটি তৈরি করা হয়েছে মূলত, প্রতিযোগিতামূলক পরীক্ষা (যেমন: বিসিএস প্রস্তুতি, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ভর্তি ক্লাস বা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ভর্তি প্রস্তুতির ক্লাস) তে, অংশগ্রহণে ইচ্ছুক প্রতিযোগীদের, ইংরেজি বিষয়ে তৈরি করতে। তবে যারা অন্যান্য শ্রেণীর ইংরেজি ব্যাকরণের শিক্ষার্থীরা আছেন তাদেরকেও এই পাঠ সাহায্য করবে। জীবনের যেকোনো মুহূর্তে আপনার ইংরেজি ঝালিয়ে নিতে কাজে দেবে আমাদের পাঠগুলো।

মোডাল (modal) হলো এক প্রকারের সহায়ক (auxiliary) বা সহায়ক (helping) ক্রিয়া (verb), যা সক্ষমতা (ability), সম্ভাবনা (possibility), অনুমতি (permission) বা বাধ্যবাধকতা (obligation) ইত্যাদি প্রকাশ করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়। Modal verb আপনার বাক্যকে আরো অর্থবহ করে তোলে এবং আপনার জটিল মন্তব্যগুলোকে সহজে প্রকাশ করতে সাহায্য করে।

মোডাল (modal) ক্রিয়াগুলি হলো can / could, may / might, must, will / would, shall / should / ought to, had better, ‘have to’ কখনো need এবং dare.
